For Men: Why Proverbs 7 Speaks to All of Us

On many occasions I have used Proverbs 7 to instruct myself and other men about the dangers of sexual lust.  The warnings of this chapter are downright fearful as it describes the consequences of following after an adultress woman.  Solomon tells us that this married woman is out at night waiting for men to seduce (vv. 9-12).  She is actually so aggressive that she seizes a senseless young man, kisses him, and immediately invites him to her bed, assuring him that her husband has gone away on a trip (vv. 13-20).

The young man is compelled by her persuasions and follows her.  The way Solomon describes the man’s decision to go with her is sobering.  He says the man follows her “as an ox goes to the slaughter… he does not know that it will cost him his life” (vv. 22-23).  The end of the chapter also hits us between the eyes as we read, “for many a victim has she laid low… her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death” (vv. 26-27).

I bring up this chapter today because of a conversation I had with our senior pastor a couple of weeks ago.  As he studied this verse in his devotion, he noticed a verse that he hadn’t paid much attention before: verse 25 says, “Let not your heart turn aside to her ways”.

Why are these words important?  Because of our tendency to exclude ourselves from certain Bible passages that we think don’t apply to us.  Our hearts can deceptively sneak away from the accountability of Scripture, and in this case, the excuse may be that you have never had a woman seize you, kiss you, and invite you to her house while her husband is away.  You may walk away from Proverbs 7 thinking, “That has never happened to me, and it probably never will”, while discounting the seriousness of the warnings for yourself.  Your assessment may be true, but oh how easy it is for your heart to follow after a woman like this without you ever meeting her, talking to her, or touching her.

Men, this warning is for us!  Your heart is easy to get to.  Technology has made it so that you don’t even have to be on a computer now to access women like this; you can get it wherever you are as long as you have your phone.  This too will lead to your ruin.  See the words of this chapter as God’s grace to you.
